Niko Kohls, Ph.D.

Dr. Niko Kohls studied psychology at the University of Jena and Freiburg, Germany. Investigating the relationship between spirituality, exceptional human experiences and mental health, he obtained his diploma (Dipl. Psych) in 1998 and his PhD in 2004, which was funded by a scholarship from the Institute of Frontier Areas of Psychology (IGPP). He developed a questionnaire for the measurement of exceptional and spiritual experiences as a part of his published PhD thesis and found an impressively high effect size for spiritual experiences as preventive for mental health problems. At present he is working at the University of Northampton as a postdoc research fellow in Prof. Harald Walach`s work group. Currently he is amongst other working on an extended replication study of his Ph.D. thesis scrutinizing the relationship between exceptional experiences and mental health.

Dr. Kohls is interested in the philosophy of mind, history of science, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), psychology of religion and cultural psychology.
